Permanent Christmas lights in Birmingham.

On a typical 100–250 ft Birmingham front, permanent lights run about $2,200–$8,500 once, priced at $22–34 per lit foot. Birmingham asks two things of a roofline fixture: never touch the slate or the copper, and disappear on a walkable street by day.

The Birmingham roofline

Permanent lighting on a Birmingham Tudor: what we are working with.

The prewar Tudors north and west of downtown have steep front gables, often two or three across one elevation, with slate or clay tile above and copper below. Track is well suited to them because the fixture lives at the fascia and drip edge: the roof surface is never touched, the gutters are never part of the attachment, and each steep gable is simply two long cuts meeting at the ridge. The copper keeps its patina because nothing is clipped to it and nothing comes down in January to scar it.

The teardown-era houses beside them are the other Birmingham job. Long clean eaves in fiber cement, stone and standing seam, where every quarter inch of sag shows from the sidewalk. A rigid channel holds a machine-straight line that strings never quite manage, and on a street where the house is viewed from ten feet away in daylight the low profile matters as much as the light at night. Against stone and brick it sits in the shadow of the eave; against pale siding it reads as a fine line of trim.

Why permanent, in Birmingham

Why Birmingham homeowners go permanent.

Commercial RGBW LEDs in a low-profile aluminum channel on the fascia, never through a shingle. Phone control, schedules, zones, rated for Michigan winters, with a warranty on the track and the diodes.

Slate stays slate

No foot traffic on tile and no fasteners through it. The channel lives at the eave, and the roof surface is never part of the job.

Copper untouched

The mount is to the fascia, not the gutter lip. Nothing bites the copper, nothing rubs a downspout, and there is no annual takedown to leave a mark.

Straight enough for the sidewalk

Walkable streets view a roofline from close range. A rigid channel cut to each gable holds its line in year five the way it did on install day.

Permanent track is an autumn install in Birmingham, and the calendar fills in order. Callers in the autumn window choose their date.

Option two

Seasonal Christmas lights in Birmingham: the lease option.

For a December-only look, or on a house whose trim should carry nothing permanent, we lease C9 displays: our commercial lights, cut to your roofline, hung in November, repaired in season, removed in January and stored. Wreaths and garland are priced with the design.

$18–32 per foot with a $595 minimum, which on a typical 100–250 ft Birmingham roofline is $1,800–$8,000 a year. At these prices a permanent channel costs about what one season of leasing costs, and from the second December on it is paid for. If you want the December-only look, or you may move within a year, the lease is the right call and we will say so.

The seasonal service is described in full in our Christmas light installation guide for Birmingham on macombpowerwashing.com.

Birmingham questions

Things Birmingham homeowners ask first.

Can permanent lighting be installed on a slate roof in Birmingham?

Around it, never through it. Fasteners go into the fascia board or sit beneath the drip edge, picked for that wood or metal, and the crew works from ladders and standoffs. The slate takes no fasteners and no feet at any point of the install.

Will the track touch our copper gutters?

No. The attachment is to the fascia, not the gutter, so the copper is not part of the install at all. Nothing is clipped to it, nothing rubs it, and because the track stays up there is no January removal to scratch it.

What does a Birmingham install cost?

$22–34 per lit foot, once. A smaller two-story at 100–150 ft runs about $2,200–$5,100; a two-story colonial at 120–180 ft about $2,600–$6,100; a colonial with a side-entry or three-car garage at 150–250 ft about $3,300–$8,500. Steep gables with more cuts sit toward the top of the band. LightCast measures yours before anyone visits.

Does the historic district or my association need to sign off?

Possibly, and it is worth a call before you book. The questions that come up are daylight appearance and whether the fixture is reversible. It is a low-profile channel on the trim, not on the roof, and we will send the product details for you to forward.
